How do I know when my boiler needs repairing? December 19, 2021 The boiler is likely the most important appliance in your home, so maybe it's time to give it some much-needed attention. Here are some signs to look out for that might imply you have a faulty boiler on your hands... Signs Your Boiler Needs Repairing: Cold radiators Cold radiators are not a definite indicator of a broken boiler. Rather, it might just be that you need to bleed them. If you have recently switched the heating on but the radiators have remained cold, grab a bleed key (available from almost all DIY shops) and try and fix the problem yourself. However, if bleeding the radiator doesn't fix the problem, it's likely that you have a faulty boiler/central heating system on your hands...We’d always recommend an annual boiler service to ensure your boiler is working at its most efficient, during a service you can also spot any issues before they get any worse. Low water pressure Check your boiler and you will find a pressure gauge. Check the gauge is between 1-1.5, if it’s not then use the filling loop to realign, if you’re not sure where the filling loop is, then please contact our engineers in Redditch so we can do it for you. A low reading suggests that pressure is being lost in the system elsewhere (potentially a water leak) or it may suggest that you need a new pressure-release valve. Strange smells Particularly important with gas-powered boilers; if you notice any strange, bad smells coming from your boiler then you should contact our gas engineers as soon as possible. The smell may be caused by a gas leak somewhere in the system, which is obviously very dangerous! Strange boiler noises Boilers that are on the verge of a breakdown will make strange noises, ranging from loud bangs, gurgling and kettling noises. These noises suggest that there's trapped air in the system or there's limescale stuck on the heat exchanger. Water leaking If you are noticing damp, mould or puddles of water forming around your boiler, then this is a clear indicator of a fault in your boiler. In particular, it suggests that there's a leak or a weak spot somewhere in the system. These faults are often caused by high stress (sometimes as a result of an inefficient boiler) and can be easily fixed once the problem has been diagnosed. It is best to get our gas engineers out to your broken boiler as soon as you spot the problem to avoid the moisture spreading or the leak getting bigger.
