Our Top Tips To Make Sure Your Boiler Is Working Correctly

Do you have a broken boiler? Your first reaction may be to contact a gas engineer, but did you know that  not all boiler issues require the assistance of a heating engineer?

You'll be relieved to learn that small boiler problems are rather common, and that many of them can be repaired or detected by yourself, helping you save you money.

We've shared our top tips on how you can check your boiler without calling a professional heating engineer!

Our Top Tips!

Check your thermostat

Have you recently experienced a power outage?  If so, it's possible that it effected your boiler's thermostat and timer, leading both to reset. This means,  your boiler is likely to only turn your heating on and off at a different time, making it seem was though it is not working correctly. Make sure the times on any timers or thermostats you're using are correct. If they've lost your previous settings, you may need to reprogram them.

Boiler Pressure

When the pressure is too low, it can cause a few issues with your boiler. You will be glad to know that this is a very common issue that can be easily solved. If you are experiencing a low pressure, this is usually below 1,  you will need to top it up. However if this keeps dropping, you will need to contact a qualifed heating engineer so carry out a thorough inspection of your boiler.

Bleed your radiators

Many people often assume that when the radiators are not working, there is an issue with the boiler. Make sure to look our for any cold spots on the radiators, if you find any, it means there is air trapped inside which is causing the radiators to not heat up properly. Make sure to carefully bleed the radiators to release the trapped air.

Got heating but no hot water?

If your heating system is working properly but you are not getting any hot water, it could be due to an issue with the diverter valve. This is a common component on a combi boiler that allows it to switch between heating and hot water. The valve is probably locked in a position or has stopped working. Try turning your heating to the highest level to receive hot water, if that is the case then you will need to hire a gas engineer to fix the issue for you.
